Preserving your wedding bouquet
artistHere at Flower Press Studios we love to create pressed flower, bespoke, original artworks from your flower bouquets whether it’s wedding flower bouquets or Valentine’s floral displays. Today I’m working on an artwork created from a single stem red rose given on Valentine’s day 2019. With a recent You Gov survey showing that spending it likely to be up 32% this year on this special day it makes sense that all that money doesn’t go to waste!
Don’t let those beautiful flowers end up in the bin. Bring them to our studios.
Imagine if your fiancé proposes this year what a lovely way to remember the day for years to come.

A lot has been happening already this year
A major life event in Jan meant that Flower Press Studios had to be put on hold until now. We have returned to work though and its lovely to see that we are featured in the latest issue of the Flower Patch magazine.https://www.buysubscriptions.com/special-editions/the-flower-patch-2

Making a xmas wreath
After seeing a number of wreaths for sale at quite high prices I thought I’d give it a go to make my own one. We have loads of rosemary in the garden (theres only so much roast lamb and potatoes I can make with it) so I thought I’d have a go at making a xmas wreath with it. I made it up as I went along but its turned out ok. I’ve also sprayed some garlic flowers and used some offcuts from the xmas cards I have for sale on my etsy shop. See some pics below at my instagram account and facebook page. Also I’ve now joined Folksy a lovely community selling UK based crafts. Please check out the links below

Bespoke artworks created
We were delighted to recently complete a commission using a beautiful bunch of flowers supplied to the studio. The client wanted a bespoke artwork made from freesias. The flowers were pressed and made into a simple but stylish artwork to be given as a gift.

First craft fair
So far we have only sold our pressed flower art and cards on this website and via Etsy but now we've decided to take the plunge and do our first fair. Flower press studios will be at the Chipstead Flower Show (https://chipsteadflowershow.co.uk/new-website/) on the 14th July. Do come by and check out our stall. Prices will be exclusive prices to the fair that day so you may pick up a bargain. We will be displaying the artworks and cards as usual and also some other pressed flower items including mobiles and gift tags. There will also be something for the little folk to do also on our stand. We spent today making some bunting and planning the display.
See you soon. Hope the weather is kind to us!

Wildflowers…To pick or not to pick
I have made it a point since I started Flower Press Studios to be wary of picking wildflowers.I only pick wildflowers that grow naturally in my own garden or that I have sown in my garden. I read this article from the Guardian when I was first starting out and it persuaded me to leave wild flowers where they are! https://www.theguardian.com/law/2011/mar/16/rules-picking-wild-flowers Plus it encourages me to grown more and more of my own flowers which can only be a good thing. The garden is looking very bare at the moment though so I've just been out and bought lots of seeds to sow. Roll on Spring.
A portfolio career makes me more productive
One of the main reasons I started Flower press studios was the opportunity to give me the flexibility to work around my children and control my day. I love my main job as a magazine art director/designer but after nearly 20 years of designing magazines its nice now to have the freedom to pursue a portfolio career. I can have 2 or 3 careers that run along side by side: Stylist, designer, creative director of Flower Press Studios and Social media manager.
My short day (I fit my work in and around the school day) has made me be more productive. I'm strict about what time I start work: 9.15am. I work solidly until 11.30 (whilst listening to the radio) .Then I break for lunch and then work through until 2.45pm. Then it's back on the school run. No time is wasted. I allocate slots for work, social media, photography, website updates, uploads to Etsy, fulfilling orders and trips to the post office. There is no chance to faff about!. I have a short day and I need to make each part count. Sometimes I do find myself working in the evenings but as the owner of a small business its no longer a chore. Everything I do I do for me and my business and I actually quite enjoy tweaking listings and keywords and working on SEO in the evenings. Pressing flowers is by nature a "slow art" so patience is key but also making use of the time I have is increasingly crucial.

Rose gold: my favourite new colour
So like everyone else it seems, last year I went through a copper phase. I own a copper clock, a copper pen holder and a copper watering can (See one from https://www.anthropologie.com pictured in lots of the styled images on this site).
To be honest, I'm not really one for following trends but I've always loved copper things. I own lots of copper jewellery for example but now I've discovered a new colour to be obsessed with: Rose gold. It's a softer take on the copper tones I own but with the same warmth and natural metallic tones. I've been experimenting mixing it (which has proved quite difficult) and then using it on some of the new pressed flower pictures. I'll post a couple of new pieces soon but I'm quite pleased with how they've turned out.

Sold out Sunflowers and daisies pressed flowers artwork
Its early days but already I have sold out of a number of artworks and cards. More are being uploaded to this site and also to my etsy shop https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/flowerpressstudios
Its lovely to think that the flowers grown in my garden that I press and preserve are making it into people's homes to be enjoyed. Two of my particular favourites have recently sold. One to the USA and one to London. Both feature flowers grown in my garden. One in particular (this one pictured) was the result of the "Great sunflower race" that my family undertook in the Summer. We all planted a seed and it was our responsibilty to water and look after that seed until it grew into a sunflower. We reached great heights and when they were starting to wilt myself and my two girls (3 and 6) picked the seed heads. We pressed the flowers and saved the seed heads for this year and now those petals are somewhere on the West coast of America!.

Flower press studios a month and a half in!
So the website is launched and have sold quite a few of my pressed flower pictures and some of the dried flower cards already. I feel like I can now call myself a pressed flower artist now that I am actually selling. My local post office https://www.lordrobertsonthegreen.com is becoming a regular hang out space (just as well they have a lovely cafe there too!). Also a couple of my favourite magazines have kindly put me on their pages (more of that to come!). It has been great contacting local independent shops too and am gradually getting the products out there.
My social media is also up and running.
Find me on instagram (My favourite!) for a behind the scenes look at how I work. https://www.instagram.com/flowerpressstudios/,
Pinterest for inspiration and colour ideas. I like to post trends and other work that inspires me https://www.pinterest.co.uk/flowerpressstudios/boards/
